{"id":392,"date":"2013-10-30T12:09:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T12:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/global-labour.info\/en\/2013\/10\/30\/the-future-of-the-domestic-workers-movement-dan-gallin-2013\/"},"modified":"2013-10-30T12:09:00","modified_gmt":"2013-10-30T12:09:00","slug":"the-future-of-the-domestic-workers-movement-dan-gallin-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/global-labour.info\/en\/2013\/10\/30\/the-future-of-the-domestic-workers-movement-dan-gallin-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future of the Domestic Workers&#8217; Movement &#8211; Dan Gallin (2013)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<em><strong>International Domestic Workers&#8217; Federation, Founding Congress,<br \/>\nMontevideo, October 26-28, 2013<br \/>\nThe Future of the Domestic Workers&#8217; Movement<br \/>\nDan Gallin<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nComrades,<br \/>\nThe subject of my speech should be the future of your movement, but who am I to tell you what your future is going to be?<br \/>\nYou have created your future right here, these past three days.<br \/>\nYou have opened your own road, by walking.<br \/>\nI can be short because there have been many speeches and everything has already been said here about your achievement \u2013 the Federation.<br \/>\nOne thing, though, is clear: your future is with the labour movement.<br \/>\nYou will contribute to shape it, perhaps more than you now realize.<br \/>\nYou have created the first international trade union federation in history that will be run entirely by women.<br \/>\nThe gender issue is now also a class issue, but it is in fact much older and more fundamental, because it goes back to the dawn of human society.<br \/>\nWe still live in a patriarchal society and we will not reach our goal \u2013 a society fit for all human beings to live in \u2013 until we have shaken off this burden. You have taken a huge step in that direction.<br \/>\nYou have also created a federation of workers who until recently were not even perceived as workers.<br \/>\nYou have demonstrated that there is no such thing as &#8220;unorganizable&#8221; workers.<br \/>\nUnder the impact of new forms of capitalism, the working class has changed and is still changing, It has become fragmented, unsure if its identity.<br \/>\nThe trade union movement has not kept up with these changes. Its response has been confused and weak.<br \/>\nOur task is now to restore the identity of all working people as a class, and to restore the trade union movement as the instrument of its emancipation.<br \/>\nYou are part of this process, you are part of the renewal of the trade union movement.<br \/>\nTo do this, you must stay united. Do not ever let yourselves be distracted by party political or personal issues.<br \/>\nAlways remember: the union comes first. The union comes first, and the Federation comes first.<br \/>\nToday we celebrate \u2013 the hard part starts tomorrow. But you are not alone.
