The Self Employed Women’s Assocation (SEWA) in India is the largest organization of women workers in the informal economy in the world, with 1.1 million members in 2008. Founded in 1972, SEWA is at the same time an organization and a movement: a labour movement, a co-operative movement and a women’s movement. It has membership in seven Indian federal States (see also: SEWA Bharat), with nearly half its membership in Gujarat. SEWA is affiliated internationally to informal workers’ organizations (WIEGO, StreetNet, HomeNet South Asia) and to international trade union federations (ICEM, ITGLWF, IUF and ITUC).
